There are usually two options for surgical repair of a hernia: open or keyhole (laparoscopic). Both options are widely used and depend on your circumstances. Both usually involve the use of a prosthetic mesh to reinforce your abdominal wall.
Recovery is more rapid following keyhole surgery, but there are times where an open surgery is more appropriate. For example, if you have prostate issues then it may be better to avoid keyhole surgery which may interfere with future prostate surgery.
