A bite of any kind will usually cause a reaction, whether it's a spider, bee, mosquito, ant, tick or something else entirely, and you'll see a little lump. Not everything that itches or causes pain is a spider bite and unless you see what's bitten you it can be difficult to identify the culprit.
If you suspect that you or someone close to you has been bitten by a spider (other than a Funnel Web or Redback Spider), it's generally okay to:
- Administer Panadol or Nurofen.
- Apply ice or cold compress.
- Ensure tetanus immunisation is up to date.
- If pain continues for more than an hour or two, if it's getting progressively worse or if you suspect it's a Funnel Web, Redback Spider or other dangerous bite call 000 or visit the emergency department.
